Tuesday Tips: Headband Storage Ideas

Headbands can take up a lot of space and create a mess!  Here's are some ideas that could help organize and take care of your headbands!

Slip your headbands over the top of a vase - seen HERE.
A large, clear jar like this works great for stashing headbands away in a hurry, and can add some color and interest to your bathroom decor.  It would be best for headbands with little/no embellishments on them.  It could be used to soft headbands too.
If you would like them tucked away in a drawer like this, try using a 2 liter soda container!
Certainly, the most popular method is creating a headband holder using an oatmeal container (perfect size) and scrapbook paper or fabric.  You can even use the inside for soft headbands, brushes and combs, or any other hair products that need to be stored.  There are many versions on the web, and here are some great ones.
HERE is a simple explanation.
HERE is a step by step tutorial.
HERE is one that was sectioned off for various types of hair items.
HERE is super pretty one!
HERE is a tutorial for a hanging headband holder with elastic loops.
HERE is an actual product specifically designed to solve the headband storage issue.

How do I store them?  I have headband stands that my hunky husband made with me!  We used PVC, a simple wooden platform, dowels, and velvet.  You can vary the height and it looks fabulous!
As you may guess, my girls have a LOT of hair accessories!  I have tried many ways of organizing and keeping them nice.  I have settled on these stackable drawers from the Container Store.  I LOVE them!  They fit perfectly on our linen closet shelves and my girls can use them easily!  They are very sturdy and they are roomy enough to fit headbands.  Can you see the white headband in there?
How do you store your headbands?  We'd love to know and maybe even add it to our list!

Tuesday Tips: Hair Tools Storage

Do your iron and blow dryer permanently live on your counter?  Are you wishing you had more counter space?  Here are some storage ideas I have found.
When we were first married, we didn't have ANY counter space in our bathroom and only a pedestal sink.  My blow dryer would actually end up IN the sink many, many times.  I know, SCARY, right?!  I'm glad we survived that.  Now my tools are thrown in a basket under the sink, but I would love to find something more useful, easily accessible, and that will help with my mess of tangled cords.
Maybe I'll actually put them away if there is a great place for them!

Here are some ideas I found...

If you like something to hang on the wall, you could try this cabinet.  It has a mirror and cubbies for hair products.  Everything is plugged in and ready to turn on with a flip of the switch on a surge protector.  Question to self: would I actually trust it and leave them plugged in and turning off the surge protector?  There is a bit of relief and satisfaction that comes from yanking the cord out of the wall!   They have it in white and espresso at Lowe's for $129.
This is definitely a cheaper way to go - just pvc attached to the inside of the cabinet door!
Boy, I may have to look into this next one.  The fake front on my cabinet is a lot smaller than this one, so I'm not sure if it would work.  It looks fabulous though!  This site gives you a little bit of a 'how to' on this project.
Amy over at the The Idea Room came up with this solution.  It totally looks like it has always been part of the space.  She gives all the links and info you need to make your own!
Here's something that looks like it would be pretty easy to install.  And it slides out!  Love that.  $150 + shipping though, hmmm….
Here is something from BB&B for $20 that can hook on to a rod, or door, or just sit on the counter.  Not my favorite idea though - I am looking for a more permanent fixture.
There are even more ideas out there!  I think I'll keep searching…

Tuesday Tips: How to Care for Your Hair Flower Clips

Here are some tips for taking care of your flower clips!

BowSweet products are made to last, but if your kiddos are especially hard on them, or they have found themselves through the wash or stuffed in a drawer, or you have other bows that don't look too great, here are some things you can do to make them look like new!

✿Trim any frays with sharp scissors.
✿Seal the edges of the petals with a wood burner (my favorite), or a lighter.  Be careful not to get too close or spend too much time in one spot, or it will burn and/or catch fire depending on the material!   If you happen to get a burnt edge, just trim the edge with scissors and try again.
✿Use an embossing gun (my favorite) or blow dryer to fluff them up, or get any folds or kinks out.
✿Use a flat iron or ribbon iron for petals that have a crease in them.  Again, don't get to close or stay in one spot too long or you could melt it.
✿Most flowers could survive the washing machine, but it's best to sponge them off with warm water.
✿Keep the clips in a safe place (like our bow holders).  We will soon have a post on storage ideas for hair clips, so stay tuned!

Tuesday Tips: Storage Ideas for Elastic Hair Ties

I'm starting to think that something like this is going on...
If you feel the same way, this post may
help you keep track of them a little better!

A carabiner (normally used for rope-intensive activities) is a clever, and oh-so-handy way of keeping hair elastics together.  You can easily stash it in your purse!  It doesn't need to be climbing strength - any version will do as long as it isn't the kind with a screw opening (that would be a pain)!

Any box/container will do.  (This one came from Office Depot.  It was on clearance.  Woot!)

This is a pretty nifty container!  It's called an Ouchless Purse Storage Pack.  I have seen them on Target's website.

As for the tiny rubber baby elastics?  Check out this cute container from Walmart!  They used to have a pill organizer-type container.  You could always get a pill box and organize the elastics on your own, but this one is ready to go and only $2.50!

Is that an ice cube tray?  Why, yes it is!  This is probably something you have at home already.  It has perfect slots for organizing colors and elastic types!

Here is a container like the earlier one (also on clearance at Office Depot).  This one has sections for keeping those tiny elastics seperate.

These no-dent soft elastic hair ties are SUPER popular!  Click here to see ours.

When you're not storing them on your wrist, you can put them in a glass or plastic jar for fun and handy storage on your bathroom counter.  This is normally used for q-tips or cotton balls.

These drawers from the Container Store are great for so many things!

This is a pretty smart invention!  I can see elastics hiding in the two storage compartments in this brush.

Check out this mommy blogger's find for hair elastics and other accessories.  Looks so nice on the dresser!  Click on this link to see what's inside the box.

Tuesday Tips - Bobby Pin Storage

t

Do you ever feel like those handy little bobby pins can also be a bit annoying?

Bobby pins seem to scatter themselves everywhere in my house!  Of course... that is, until I actually NEED one and then I can't seem to find any!  Maybe I need to look closer...

I love to organize and this is one of those things that I had to fix!
Here are some fabulous ideas!...

Magnets are perfect for bobby pins.  No, this isn't a bar of soap.  It is a magnetic pin holder that I usually use for straight pins.  It works great to corral those little buggers!

Not easy to spill... easy to grab a bobby pin or two... looks nice...  I'd say a magnetic paper clip holder is a great way to go.  You can even wrap fabric around it to match your decor.  Check out Kitty's adorable version HERE.

I have seen magnetic strips floating around the internet world, so I created my own.  Now they won't fly around my drawer and wedge their way into drawer cracks and other things!  (I think they have a mind of their own.)  This is in my bathroom drawer, but you could put it anywhere.  Inside of a medicine cabinet door is a great place. Oh, and yes - I did take the time to line up those bobby pins.  Did I mention I like to organize?

I LOVE the Container Store!  These boxes are great for any small storage needs you have - makeup, cotton balls and q-tips, fingernail polish, etc.  These can look nice and organized on your counter and you can easily see what's inside.

This is actually a box I found on clearance at Office Max.  Any small containers can work.  Anything that works for you, works great.  This works for me!

This is a matchbox-type container that comes full of bobby pins from Sally.  This is small enough to stash away in your purse.  It holds plenty of bobby pins.  Also, they are very nice, high quality pins.

YUP!  Tic Tac containers!  They are useful for so many things, aren't they?  This can be thrown in your bag too!

Altoids.  I am not a mint person, so I didn't have a big problem throwing them out for this bobby pin storage.  Priorities, right?

I use a few of these options and they work great.  Now my bobby pins aren't on every counter, hiding in the carpet, basking in the sun on the window sill, rusting on the shower shelf, swimming around in my bags and drawers, or falling down the drain!  (Well, most of the time...)

I'd love to hear how you store your bobby pins!
Happy storage!

Ribbon Storage/Organization

Here are a few of my favorite ribbon storage options...

I LOVE these Pro Ribbon Organizers from organizemore.com! They are well made and packed safely. They can sit on a table or be mounted to the wall.
Bookshelf-type organization like this works perfectly for me. I don't like organizers that have a dowel through the middle of the roll because the ribbon unravels easily, and you have to take a bunch of rolls off to get to one in the middle. The Organize More shelves are my favorite, but they do not fit my 100-yard rolls of ribbon. Maybe the hubby will have to get busy building something larger! ;)

I found these DVD/CD towers with adjustable shelves on craigslist for $15/each!
Just put the back of the shelf one peg lower than the front to keep the ribbon from rolling out.

Good ol' drawers work great for ribbon as well! These Jetmax cubes came from Michael's craft store. I love these cubes for all kinds of storage. They can be arranged any way you like. Be sure to use a Michael's 40% off coupon! You can get a coupon from the newspaper, by joining their mailing list, or with your receipt after purchasing from the store.

For all those scraps of ribbon, try clear plastic jars. You can see what is in them, and they are pretty to look at! They can be used for storing all kinds of items too. These are from Making Memories. I got mine from Michael's and Robert's craft stores. Again, use those coupons!

Plastic bins are always great for long-term storage. This rolling bin can be tucked under a bed or couch. Because most ribbon rolls are not too wide, they fit well in a shallow bin. A single layer is best, so you don't have to dig through a taller bin of ribbon to find what you need. Be sure to have the lid to keep the dust out. This one came from Walmart. I believe you can purchase them separately, not just in a set of 4.

Happy organizing!
